i think it is very difficult to eradicated, but it can be controlled. one attempt has been made 50 years back in NEPAL. it controlled malaria very much but again after some years malaria reached to same level as previous one.

A well intentioned question Mr Mustapha.
Malaria,diarrhoea,malnutrition....these three alone cause more death in developing countries than many many diseases put together.
Mosquitoes--Malaria--Poor hygiene--lack of development, are closely inter-related.There are certain facts which should be remembered.
1/"Mosquitoes can not be eradicated totally but malaria incidence can be brought to a very minimal level."
Many developed countries have shown it already.
2/No Govt. can alone do it without peoples active participation. No agency can keep your house and its sorrounding, clean for you except you yourself.Society in general has also a great responsibility to keep its environment clean.
3/Governments must ensure proper waste disposal and proper drainage systems and regular timely insecticide sprays.
4/A good health care system development will prevent many diseases and detect and treat many diseases in early phases including malaria thus breaking a vicious cycle.
5/Public awareness(health education) about various common diseases is very much needed.
6/Regular use of ceratin medicines in highly endemic araes in consultation with doctors.
7/Ultimately development of a vaccine is very much needed and long overdue!

Greetings,
Kuldip

Yes I think its more of a social health problem than can be helped by changing the way people live than a unvincible sickness. I agree the mosquito cant be errradicated, is part of our trofic chains, however, there is no need for keeping it on our own towns as our guest. Anyway, I think rather than spending lots of money on people who gets infected we should be spending it on people education that will turn into proper diagnosis, health care, mosquito poblation kept to the minimum, and also on research. Okey, see ya, comment plis! your ideas on the topic this an important worldwide health issue. Bye°

You are quite right Gibran. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of treatment.Yes,health education from the very childhood is the key.

yes indeed malaria is very prevalent in developing countries though difficult to eradicate i believe it can be done though it is expensive and long term .if people stick to the solutions suggested above and with the use of genetic modifcation the vectors can be made to be sterile to stem their production while the rest due to other methods do not survive and will go extinct but then are we prepared to change our lifestyles to save the lives that are being lost or we accept them as guests

U r right Stephanie.Genetic modification has always been one solution.Certainly this way we can save innumerable lives and sufferings.
But there is one philosphical question which comes to my mind.Nature creates every species on this planet to serve some specific purposes.Everthing is here due its being in scheme of the things of nature which may not be apparent to us presently. Why mosquitoes were created and what 'good'purpose they serve in nature I dont know but certainly there must be something which may be presently escaping our eyes!(or it is not what I am imagining?)but if it is so then dabbling with nature may not prove wise in long term. Here I will tell u a story which I viewed on a very reputed TV Channel. In Mao's early China small birds used to destroy lots of wheat in fields every year.So some 'wise men' suggested to Chairman Mao that people should be encouraged and rewarded to for killing as many birds as possible. It was accepted as natioanl policy.People started killing birds and getting their monetary rewards as well.Over few years, gross national wheat production fell instead of rising.Reason? The various bugs & insects in field started destroying the grain. These insects were the birds feed.No need to say that policy was withdrawn.

Best solution I belive are as follows--
*Education about the benefits of cleanliness and orderliness.
*Development of a vaccine against Malaria

Please note that in my above reply I am NOT saying that mosquitoe population should not be controlled.Yes it should be.I am only little apprehensive about their genetic dabbling presently.Who knows what Frankenstein monster we might unknowingly create.Genetic science is yet in its infancy in present stage. Before we modify genetics of any species which nature's intelligence took millions of years to develop,we should be absolutely sure about it.

i perfectly agree with you that dabbling with nature is not the best because every good thing can do a bad turn but yet i still mantain it can be eradicated and there are other options which can be explored and it will go a long way to save precious life .
